Exploring Virtual Realities in Alaska

Decision Theater North is a part of EPSCoR’s mission to build scientific capacity in Alaska and aims to do this through interactive, high-resolution visual environments. Building on these technological capabilities, we have recently acquired three sets of the HTC Vive Virtual Reality (VR) systems, exploring their potential for collaboration and visualization inside, as well as outside of Decision Theater North. We imagine possibilities of a decision theater that is mobile, capable of being deployed in remote regions across Alaska and the circumpolar north.

Our goals are threefold for virtualization within DTN:

  • Use the software and applications that are already available for emerging VR technologies;
  • Partner with students and researchers across the University of Alaska system, as well as other community members that include artists, content developers, and small businesses;
  • To develop original virtual reality content that is unique to Alaska.

In pursuit of these goals, we are partnering with the computer science department at UAF to support an undergraduate student to develop original VR content.

EPSCoR is hosting an all-day Virtual Reality Seminar in DTN on March 13, 2017, for those interested in developing their project or seeking inspiration from others already involved in virtual reality across Alaska. It will feature short presentations, group workshops and technical demos with scientists, researchers, students, artists, designers, content developers, small businesses and other members of the community from around Fairbanks and across Alaska.

Please fill out the following form if you are interested in attending this all-day event!
